ENTRY #5
Voice & Intention
THE MUSICMy song is finally finding its true voice.
I wrote it in a key that felt perfect while composing it at the piano, but somewhere along the way I realized it wasn't where my voice wanted to live. So, I've been carefully transposing the entire piece, moving it into a place where I can sing it comfortably instead of pushing for notes that aren't really mine. This would be easy if I had used a computer to chart it out, but I wrote this one out by hand… so this has become an arduous task!
I don’t mind, though. This is a reminder that songs have a way of revealing themselves over time. Sometimes the destination is clear, but the path takes a few unexpected turns.
Now I'm turning my attention to the arrangement and getting ready for the studio session. Soon, all the musicians will be in the same room, each bringing their own ideas, personality, and artistry to the song. This is one of my favorite parts of the process—hearing something that started quietly alone at a piano begin to take on a life of its own.
The notes are on the page. The story is written. And before long, this song will start becoming what it was always meant to be.
This is where it all comes to life.

THE WINEEvery now and then, something unexpected comes into your life and quietly changes everything.
For me, that came one evening at The French Laundry, the legendary three-Michelin-star restaurant in Napa Valley. The evening itself has long passed, but its influence continues to shape everything I do with Whiteboard.
While the food was remarkable, it wasn’t the cuisine that left the deepest impression on me. It was the feeling that every element of the experience had been considered, refined, and placed exactly where it belonged. There was a quiet confidence to it all—a sense that every decision had been made with intent.
What struck me most was that the experience never called attention to itself. The details weren’t presented as features to be admired. They simply existed as part of a larger whole. The timing, the pacing, the hospitality, the transitions from one moment to the next—everything felt natural and effortless, yet you knew a considerable amount of thought had gone into creating that feeling.
It was truly extraordinary.
Toward the end of the evening, I signed the check with a pen bearing the simple French Laundry’s paper clip logo. I casually commented on how much I liked how it wrote… and they immediately told me to keep it. It was a simple gesture, one that likely cost very little, yet years later that pen still sits on my desk. I see it every day.
Over time, I’ve come to realize that the pen itself was never the point. It became a reminder that the most meaningful experiences are often shaped by details people never consciously notice—not because those details matter on their own, but because together they create a feeling.
Whether it’s a paper stock, a label detail, the pacing of a story, or the way a wine and a song come together to create a single expression, I find myself returning to the philosophy behind that evening. Thomas Keller and The French Laundry showed me that true craftsmanship is not simply attention to detail. It’s intention—the belief that the smallest details deserve the greatest care, because they are often what define a truly exceptional experience.
That mindset has become part of how I approach nearly everything we create through Whiteboard, all from one simple, spectacular, life-changing dinner… and my awesome pen.
